Hobart Handler 140, hopefully it’ll be useful for simple body work, exhaust, and frame repairs! I haven’t done any welding since a small project during a college internship years ago, anyone have any tips?

Very nice. I’ve got an older one, and have had a bit of fun with it. No real tips, other than have fun with it.

Congrats! I’ve been looking at that same welder so be sure to let us know how it goes.

I believe I see a gas regulator... that is definitely the right way to go with a mig unit.

My only tip: Don’t set yourself on fire.

welding masks and gloves are for sissies, use your bare hands.

Practice Practice Practice. Watch you-tube. Learn the cursive-e method to lay dimes. Whenever someone has scrap metal around, cut it and weld it back together. Weld it at 90 degrees, see what happens. Better to burn through someone’s microwave housing that they were throwing away, than learn about burn through on an important project

Effectively zero experience, but two tips: invest in a bottle of gas and don’t buy a cheapo helmet. Sovande is the guy to talk to.

Make sure your wire size and tip size match. Make sure your wire type and gas type match

Just don’t follow David Tracy’s advice
Do yourself a favor and watch some youtube videos on beginner welding tricks. Also if you have a local college that does night classes take a beginner welding class - it’s worth it.
Other than that just get a bunch of scrap steel and weld. A lot. Try changing one setting at a time and do a short weld. You’ll get the feel and the ear for what sounds and looks right and what doesn’t

Getting the s
ettings
correct and cleaning/prep of the metal were the biggest difference for me. MIG is so easy that practice
doesn’t matter.
(I’m exaggerating
)

Yep, just a small bottle of C25. I didn’t want to waste my time trying to make flux core look acceptable for bodywork.

Bodywork ? Use a backer, like this for example, it helps not burning through :
Also, I know some will say it’s heresy and not proper, but butt-weld sheet metal is a giant pita, so get one of those to prep the parts and overlap the sheets you’re welding...

If I’ve learned one thing from this pandemic, it's masks are some liberal bullshit.

If you are doing body work you will need to use gas.

Nice rig. I have a millermatic that looks about the same as that one there. They are very nice units. With the gas and solid wire, you’ll be good to go. Just practice a bit and you’ll be able to tell by the sound of you have it adjusted correctly. And if you do exhaust or sheet metal, just buy some extra material for the first few attempts just in case.

What type of hood do you have? I was fortunate enough to get one with auto darkening when I got my rig, I wouldn’t go back to a conventional hood now. Harbor freight has cheapie ones that would be just fine too. No need to spend big bucks on a pro helmet.

I have the same welder and its been perfect for my around the garage projects. What cart are you using? I have the HF one and all i can say about it is it holds a welder.

Just an older c heap auto darkening harbor freight one, nothing fancy but it worked pretty well when I was learning to stick weld years ago.

It’s the cheap HF one.

Those auto hoods are nice. Even the cheap ones are good enough.

The glamorous and eponymous portion of the process is the minority of the time and effort needed to complete the job well.
Like most things you’ll watch a video of this reality is usually underrepresented.
